Questions asked to Miriam Jager

What is distinctive in your approach?

In my opinion, this is the combination of my educational background as a psychologist and my post-graduate degree in business administration. After completing my studies, I was employed in the business world, working (among other things) as the director of an organization. During this time, I gained a lot of experience in career guidance counselling, providing training and workshop sessions, and one-to-one and team coaching. I approach many of my coaching activities from a psychological and business perspective. At times, my role as a coach is dominant, while in other situations, I rely more on my background as a psychologist. It’s great to be able to adapt my style in the moment to exactly what is needed for a client or a situation.

Clients are amazed they can make such concrete changes in such a short period of time.

What do clients say?

I am definitely calmer. I understand that my thoughts are my own and that I can do what I want with them; heed them, consider them, acknowledge them but take no action, or let them
go altogether. I can now play around with my thoughts, and I feel freer in my own head. I see more possibilities in my life, and I have confidence in the future.

I have gained insight into my strengths, and this has given me a much clearer picture of what I am good at and what I enjoy. As a result, I can be more specific when searching for a role that suits me. We also worked through some ‘old woes’, which means there is nothing standing in my way now.

It struck me that the answers needed to come from me. I believe this is key, because it forces you to think and highlights what you find difficult and where the bottlenecks are. It means that you are in control of the decisions being made, and not someone else.

The anecdotes Miriam told me about her own life made me feel more comfortable. It also made it a more personal process. Maybe unconsciously, this was one of the most crucial
elements for me. It was not necessarily the content of the anecdotes, but the ‘equality’ they brought about.

Monday

Miriam welcomes her one-to-one coaching clients in an office that is light and spacious. The art on the wall stimulates the mind. A comfortable space to discuss matters in a calm and private setting. Choose between the chair or the couch, whichever feels appropriate. “The couch is what most people associate with a psychologist”, she laughs. “For me, it is more important to ensure people feel comfortable and sufficiently at ease so that they can discuss everything.”

The matters that arise during one-to-one coaching sessions are diverse: they range from dealing with perfectionism or worrying about a high workload [work-related stress] to insecurity. “Many people question what the reason is behind it all. Together we go in search of some meaning.”
